With the right planning, wedding photos don't have to break the bank.

Wedding photographers usually take up a large chunk of a wedding budget. There are ways to cut the costs of wedding photographs, but they don't come without risk. Professional photographers come with high-tech and expensive equipment as well as years of experience, which shows in the quality of their photographs. Cutting a professional photographer out of the budget means there is a chance that photographs will not come out clearly and that some special moments will be missed.

  1. Disposables

    • Disposable cameras can be creative and fun. Purchase enough cameras to use as placeholders at the reception table. Ask everyone at the wedding to get in on the action by taking an entire camera's worth of photos and collect at end of wedding. The disposables will cover the reception, but not the ceremony, so plan on designating a single person to shoot those photographs or hire a photographer for just the ceremony.

    Student

    • If there is a college in your area, chances are the school has a photography program. Talk to the photography department head and ask about hiring a student to shoot the wedding. The professors will know which students are ready for such a big assignment. The student will get a great deal of material for their portfolio and you will drastically reduce your photography budget. You might even be able to talk the professor into making it a class assignment. With several students at your wedding instead of one, you are sure to get some great shots.

    Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot

    • It is usually much less expensive to have a professional photographer take photographs in their studio. Set an appointment and have your posed photographs shot in the studio. It can either be done early in the day before the wedding or on a different day altogether. If the photographs are done before the wedding, you can display them at the reception.

    Friends and Family

    • Friends and family are often eager to help. Ask everyone to bring his own camera and take lots of photographs. The more people taking pictures at the wedding the better your chances are of getting good shots. If there are certain family members you know have good cameras and take good photographs, consider asking them to step aside with you and the wedding party for some posed shots.
