Large Dog Breeds That Don't Shed
When selecting a dog for a pet, one consideration involves shedding, or the lack thereof. Selecting a no-shed large dog will lead to a hypoallergenic breed, like those suggested by the American Kennel Club. Whether you suffer from allergies caused by dog fur or you do not want dog fur all over your house, a large no-shed dog makes a good pet.

Irish Water Spaniel
-
The Irish water spaniel is an old breed, having been recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1884. This breed is the largest of the spaniels and was originally bred to retrieve fowl for hunters. It is known today as the clown of the spaniel breed. Labeled as "the best kept secret of the dog world" according to the Irish Water Spaniel Club of America, this breed is considered one of the rarer breeds based upon registration numbers. The breed makes a good family pet as opposed to a one-person dog. This breed is not 100 percent no-shed but is considered hypoallergenic for many people with allergies and any shedding will be slight.
Standard Poodle
-
Standard poodles offer endless opportunities for hair styles. Poodles of all sizes do not shed; only standard-size poodles qualify as a large dog breed. Poodles always exhibit solid colors like black and white; they are never a mixture. When combining all sizes, poodles are one of the most popular breeds of dogs based upon registrations. They originated in Germany as water retrievers in their standard size. Smaller versions appear at later times. Because they do not shed, a standard poodle's fur grows quickly and it must be brushed and groomed on a regular basis to avoid long matted fur.

Portuguese Water Dog
-
A Portuguese water dog lives at the White House with the Obamas. This breed received publicity as the choice of President Obama and his family for a hypoallergenic dog. This dog accompanied Portuguese fishermen on their boats for centuries, diving in the water to retrieve fish and nets, carrying notes between fishing vessels and guarding boats. Technology has made this role obsolete. The dog has a waterproof coat and can swim for hours making it a great water dog. This breed requires daily exercise commensurate with its size. The no-shed coat requires regular maintenance by keeping it trimmed.
Giant Schnauzer
-
The giant schnauzer is a larger version of the standard schnauzer. They were developed in Germany as working dogs on farms and also as guard dogs for businesses. Their coat is black or salt and pepper. Like all no-shed dogs, their wiry coats demand regular maintenance, and they require regular daily exercise like walks or time in the yard.
