Does the iPhone Camera Have a Zoom?

The iPhone has become a popular camera replacement with its high-resolution camera that creates stunning images from a phone. However, an iPhone may not be the best choice if you need a zoom feature. While the iPhone camera does have a zoom, as of the iPhone 5s with iOS 7, it is a digital zoom function, which reduces overall image quality.

Digital vs Optical Zoom

  • The zoom you are most likely familiar with is the optical zoom, which makes distant objects appear closer by physically moving the various glass elements inside the camera lens to magnify the image. This type of zoom results in no degradation in image quality because the image is captured at full resolution.

A digital zoom isn’t actually a zoom at all. Rather, it crops the image and enlarges it to fill the same area. This results in an image of lower quality than the non-zoomed version. In most circumstances this doesn’t present a problem. However, digitally zoomed images may not be suitable for printing because of their lower resolution.

Using the iPhone Zoom

  • To access the iPhone zoom function within the Camera app, use two fingers to pinch the screen to zoom in and out. From there, you can either continue to pinch and zoom, or you can use the slider at the bottom of the screen to change the zoom setting.
