Acrylic countertops are sometimes referred to as solid surface countertops. They're built by laying a thick piece of acrylic over particle board or plywood substrate. One thing homeowners like about acrylic countertops is the possibility of integrating an acrylic sink without any seams. Popular brands of acrylic countertops include Corian, Formica, Meganite and Avonite. Acrylic countertops are a popular choice, but like any other surface, come with a list of pros and cons.
Pro: No Base Material Needed
Acrylic countertops are constructed with built-in support, so there's no need to install it over a plywood or particle board substrate. This is especially important if you or anyone in your family is sensitive to the formaldehyde glue used in such installations.
Pro: Stain Resistance
Acrylic countertops are non-porous and relatively stain resistant. Any stains that do manage to take hold can often be sanded out.
Pro: Easy To Clean
Acrylic countertops are durable and easy to clean. In fact, most acrylic countertops can easily withstand abrasive cleansers.
Most marring to an acrylic countertop can be professionally repaired, including burns, scratches and holes.
Con: The Look
Some people admire the clean look of an acrylic countertop while others find it "plastic looking," and unnatural, a throwback to linoleum.
Acrylic countertops cost as much as the top counter materials on the market, making them too expensive for many home improvement budgets.
Acrylic countertops are vulnerable to knife cuts, scratches, melting, and even holes. While each of these problems can be addressed by a professional, that service is an additional expense.
