Hold a contest where students can submit a proposal for an original theme, and the winner can help pick specific decorations or be mentioned on prom night by the DJ or band. Basing the prom around a different era in time is an easy way to create a fun ambience and a memorable atmosphere. The roaring '20s gives itself to elegant dresses for the girls and classic gangster garb for the guys, along with swing dance music. Old-timey decorations with peacock feathers and old-fashioned tables add to the theme and are inexpensive. Another popular era would be the '70s and '80s for a retro theme. By making the theme "Paris" you can arrange decorations like a painted cardboard model of the Eiffel Tower in the background and romantic candlelight at the tables.
