The Braitmayar Foundation is a private fund that supports programs seeking to improve k-12 education.

The Braitmayer Foundation is a family foundation based in Marion, Massachusetts. It was established in 1964 from a donation by Marian S. Braitmayer. Its purpose is to offer grants to organizations involved in improving the quality of K-12 education, or organizations working to improve the quality of life in Marion or the surrounding area. As of 2011, five members of the Braitmayar family act as trustees and directors of the foundation.

  1. Objectives

    • The Braitmayar Foundation focuses on providing financial support, in the form of grants, to organizations promoting the use of "innovative practices" in education. For example, in 2010, the Foundation gave a $10,000 grant to Maine Audubon to expand environmental education by providing outdoor educational experiences in rural areas in Maine. The Foundation is also interested in the areas of curriculum reform and school reform, and in supporting professional development for K-12 teachers from diverse backgrounds. The Foundation also provides funding for community programs in Marion, Massachusetts and the surrounding area, that are designed to improve the quality of life for residents.

    Basic Grant Guidelines

    • Braitmayar Foundation education grants may be used anywhere in the United States. Grants given to residents of Marion must be used in Marion and the surrounding areas. The grant money can be used as challenge grants, matching grants or as seed money. The Braitmayar Foundation intends the grants to be used for a specific purpose, and does not provide money for general operations, building endowment programs or capital improvements. Only a small portion of each grant may be used for providing child-care or after-school programs, or to purchase equipment and materials. All grant proposals must be sent in as a hard copy to the following address:

    Large Grants

    • As of 2011, applicants for Braitmayar Foundation education grants of up to $35,000 must submit an initial proposal by March 15th. The initial proposal must include a two-page letter of inquiry, giving the project's time-frame and a description of the project. A proposed budget and proof of tax-exempt status must also be included. By August 1st, the Foundation will invite qualified organizations to submit full proposals. The full proposal is due on October 15th. A trustee of the Braitmayar Foundation will personally visit applicants by the end of February, and the final decision is announced by the following March 15th.

    Small Grants

    • No initial proposal is needed for Braitmayar Foundation education grants of $10,000 or less. Instead, as of 2011, applicants for these grants must submit a three-page proposal by March 15th. The proposal must include a description of the project, a time-frame for the project, a proposed budget and proof of the organization's tax-exempt status. Decisions on these grants are announced by August 15th.
