Can Any Book Be Downloaded to the Kindle?
There are a wealth of titles available for the Kindle electronic reader, the top-selling item for Amazon.com as of April 2011. While the Kindle owner doesn't have access to every book that exists, new books are being published on the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform every day, and already-published books are made newly available for download to the Kindle.

Downloadable Books
-
As of April 2011, the Kindle store on Amazon.com offers over 890,000 e-books, newspapers, magazines and blogs for download. Books in all genres of fiction and non-fiction can be downloaded.
Non-Downloadable Books
-
For a book to be downloadable to Kindle, it must first be converted to the e-book format. While some books today are released only in the e-book format, the vast majority of books in past years were released in a paper version only, and may exist in a text computer file as well. This text-based format, once uploaded to Amazon.com's publishing platform, can be transferred to an e-book format and be made available for Kindle users.

Publisher's Rights
-
A book publisher, the book author or both have rights to any book. When the publisher elects to publish the book in paper format only, this book will not be available in an e-book format. For example, the "Harry Potter" book series is unavailable in the Kindle store as of April 2011 since the book's publisher has elected not to release it in this format.
Out of Copyright Books
-
When a book has passed out of copyright, as many classic books such as "Dracula," "War and Peace," "Little Women," "The Iliad" and "Sense and Sensibility" have, the book will often become available for free on the Kindle. As of April 2011, Amazon.com offers many classic books for free, some of which are listed on the "Kindle Top 100 Free" list.
