Portrait Ideas for Dance Studios

Dance should be photographed for the art that it is.

Veer away from boring dance studio portraits. Everyone has seen the generic team or dance class photo, the only variation being the people in the photo. Before taking pictures, brainstorm ideas with the dance team, as the photographer is not always concerned with making the most memorable picture. Bring along your own ideas to incorporate and you may find that your dance team is rewarded with better than average photos.

Theme

Establish a theme for your picture. Use wacky hairstyles and over the top makeup. Bring the dance team to a venue outside of the studio, such as an alley. Ask the team to wear street clothing instead of traditional dance garments. Instead of using a routine, tell the dance team members to freestyle dance. Position the team so that everyone can be seen. Avoid posing for the most part to obtain a more natural photo. Candid photos are more likely to capture the personality traits of team members.

Keeping With the Company

Use the photo shoot as a company advertisement opportunity. Ask the dance team or individual to dress in dance clothing that features a company logo. Arrange the team in the dance studio and shoot pictures of them as if they are getting ready for a performance. Take pictures of the team styling hair, applying makeup, or practicing routines. Photograph the team rehearsing backstage so that the photos look candid.

Dance Style

Organize a photo shoot and use various styles of dance. Have the team change outfits throughout the shoot to show the versatility of the dance team. Photograph the team while dressed in hip-hop dance gear in the mid dance. Switch themes between ballet and jazz dance numbers or tap-dancing numbers, and change the dress style to fit the dance theme. Use the same venue for each type of shoot to show the dance team can pull off a variety of dance methods in any venue.

Performance

Actual performance pictures are always favorites as these display true talent. Capture the talent of a team by photographing them through a performance or two. Take as many pictures as possible so that there are more from which to choose. Try to include the audience so pictures have an added element. The more staging elements included in the photos, the more professional and strong the team looks.
