Most beauty pageants do not allow a separate hair and make-up team for each candidate, therefore all beauty pageant contestants must do their own hair and make-up styling. Invest in a good kit with pigments that can outlast the stage lights, perspiration and constant movement on stage. Choose brands that are hypoallergenic to avoid getting last minute zits just before the pageant starts. When doing your own hairstyle, always remember that the crown can be yours and select a hairstyle that would look good with it.

One of the best tools to have is a solid fitness routine that you can easily maintain while you are on the actual pageant. Pageants do not happen overnight and the selection and filming process takes at least two weeks to complete. During this time, you should be able to maintain your shape even without a well-equipped gym present. Match the fitness routine with a healthy diet formulated for your specific needs such as a food rich in iron to keep your hair shiny and smooth.

The question and answer portion of a beauty pageant can make or break a candidate. Some pageant schools go the extra mile by selling question and answer kits made of cards pre-printed with beauty pageant questions. A timer is most often included to simulate the pressured environment when you are about to answer questions from the pageant's judges. For best results, record your answers so that you can study how you enunciate the words as you speak.

Learn from other people's mistakes (and successes) by watching selected recordings of past beauty pageants. Thanks to video recording equipment, it is fairly easy to get hold of past pageants, both international and local ones, and study how the other contestants posed, answered and handled themselves in highly stressful situations. Observe how they walk, talk, turn and even smile. Study what the eventual winner did to stand out from the rest of the girls and note down the items that you should definitely avoid (such as tripping on your dress).
