Some people have pondered the differences between Coke Zero and Coca-Cola Light. While the similarities of the two outweigh their differences, pinpointing what distinguishes Coke Zero from Coca-Cola Light will ultimately make the decision on which drink a person will buy.

Product Names

  • Both Coca-Cola Light and Coke Zero carry other names. Coca-Cola Light is the name that is given to distribute the drink within most European countries and in South East Asia. In France, it is known as Coca or Coca Light. In the United States and most English-speaking countries, Coca-Cola Light is known as Diet Coke. Coca-Cola Light has also been given the names Diet Coca-Cola and Coke Light.

Coke Zero can be called Coca-Cola Zero, but it has been given the nickname Bloke Coke, because of its target audience being men.

Product Launch and Variants

  • Coca-Cola Light was launched in 1982, and by 1983 it became the best selling diet drink in the world. In 1986, The Coca-Cola Company launched a cherry-flavored version which would be the first of many variants of Coca-Cola Light. As of publication, Coca-Cola Light can come in regular, cherry, vanilla, lime, caffeine-free, Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda, and Diet Coke Plus.

Coca-Cola Light is available in 149 countries. Twenty-two years after the launch of Coca-Cola Light, Coke Zero is released. Coke Zero is available in variants of cherry and vanilla and is available in 87 countries worldwide.

Packaging and Target Audience

  • Coca-Cola Light uses a metallic color for their product's background, and is associated with being a women's drink. Coca-Cola Light appeals mostly to women who are interested in losing weight.

Coke Zero generally comes in a bottle or can with a black background and is intended to taste like the original Coca Cola drink, but as a diet drink. Coke Zero was created to appeal to a young male audience.

Sweeteners and Calories

  • Coke Zero is an actual variant of the original Coca Cola drink, unlike Coca-Cola Light which is reformulated with different ingredients. Coke Zero contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium as sweeteners and has half a calorie per 3.4 oz. (100ml). Coca-Cola Light is only sweetened with aspartame and has one full calorie per 3.4 oz. (100ml).
