Bartender Manager Duties


Bartender managers are responsible for supervising bar staff and maintaining a positive bar atmosphere. These managers need to make sure the bartenders are following proper procedures and are maintaining a safe environment. Bartender managers also should be good at training, organizing and budgeting to maintain all of the important functions of the bar.

Manage Staff

  • Bartender managers are responsible for hiring and supervising the bar staff. They must train the staff and monitor their progress. In addition, bar managers must do periodic employee evaluations to provide feedback on employees' strengths and weaknesses. In addition, they should make sure the bar is fully staffed at all times by creating an employee schedule and keeping track of any absences.

Manage Money

  • Bartender manager duties include keeping track of the money the bar makes. Managers must plan ways to bring in customers through specials such as "happy hour" and "two-dollar draft beer," and must monitor the response to see if any promotional changes are needed. In addition, bartender managers should open and close out the cash registers and count the money at the end of the shifts. These people also need to budget for the payroll and costs of running the bar.

Interact Well with People

  • It is important that bartender managers interact well with others. They will be interacting not only with staff members but also with customers. They should have a pleasant attitude and maintain a clean appearance. In addition, bartender managers should monitor the staff and maintain a visible presence in the bar.

Know the Laws

  • Bartender managers should know local, state and federal regulations for maintaining a bar. They must train staff to comply with these regulations to avoid costly lawsuits or fines. Bartender managers should know the laws regarding serving drinks to minors and operating hours. In addition, they need to know when they may be held responsible for providing customers with too much alcohol.
