Too much individualism can hinder good business.

Good business is all about relationships and relationships are all about perception. How you are perceived is dictated by your appearance, personality and actions. These factors make unique and memorable individuals. However, when it comes to business and individualism there is a point at which too much individualism can damage business relationships and create an undesirable public image. That can decrease profits and deter potential clients.

  1. Appearance

    • Most men and women in business take pride in their appearance while adding a hint of their own personality and flair to their wardrobe, accessories and hair style. As a business professional seeking to appeal to a diverse group of clientele, a clean-cut and well-maintained appearance is the most ethical choice to maintain a desirable public image for the professional, her company and her field. Tattoos should not be visible, clothing should be modest, piercings should be worn only in the ears and only on women. Clothing choices should be professional or business casual. Hair color and style should be natural. It is important that the business man or woman's appearance not detract from the business objective.

    Political and Religious Views

Most people have political and religious views. But how they choose to express them in a business capacity can lead to ethical dilemmas. A business professional should generally avoid topics of a political or religious nature, as these conversations rarely find participants who agree on many points. Take special care with clientele to keep conversations away from this ethical minefield. If for some reason addressing political or religious issues is unavoidable, practice common courtesy and etiquette.

    Attitude

    • The ethical implications of attitude, though unspoken, are immeasurable. A good attitude can convey feelings of respect and camaraderie, while a poor attitude can convey disrespect and send potential clients running. Attitude is defined as a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something that is typically reflected in your behavior. Polite, courteous conversation paired with positive commentary and a smile will leave no doubt about your attitude as a business professional.

    Integrity

Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Business professionals who conduct themselves with integrity are more likely to create and maintain lasting relationships throughout their business career. A business professional can call his integrity into question by lying, stealing, cheating, dressing immodestly, acting aloof or uptight and engaging in questionable topics of conversation. On that note, keep conversations polite and courteous and never include profanity, sexual connotations, racism or sarcasm.
