Use a wooden spoon to create your own wooden figures.

There are a variety of wooden objects that you can purchase, paint and design on your own. Craft stores often sell unfinished wooden items, such as bird houses, picture frames, ornaments, trays, jewelry boxes and plaques. If you have paintbrushes, acrylic paints and a blank wooden craft object, you can begin to create your own toys or household decorations.

  1. Nesting Dolls

    • One craft project that you can make is your own set of nesting dolls. Nesting dolls are wooden dolls that decrease in size from largest to smallest and fit inside one other. You can purchase a blank set of nesting dolls at a craft store. Before you paint your nesting dolls, you should use sandpaper to sand any doll lids that you have trouble opening or closing. Use acrylic paints to paint the outside of the dolls. Make sure that you paint the dolls when their top and bottom halves are together or closed. For a basic nesting doll, you can paint a face, scarf and dress on each doll. A set of nesting dolls often have a theme such as a flower theme. The most elaborate motifs are painted on the largest doll, and then the designs become simpler with each smaller doll.

    Fairy Doors

    • You can purchase a miniature wooden fairy door to paint from a craft store. Children, especially, may want to take part in this craft. The wooden fairy door stands upright on a wooden stand and the door is sealed closed. You can use acrylic paints to paint the door and then you can sprinkle glitter on the wet paint to make it look like fairy dust. Once dried, place the door on a table, on a windowsill or in another empty space in your home. The website TaDaa Studio offers fairy door kits that come with an unfinished fairy door and a lock and key that you can glue on the door.

    Eggs

    • Obtain blank wooden eggs from a craft store. Use a paintbrush and acrylic paints to decorate them. You can experiment with painting different designs, such as floral, striped or spotted motifs. To help inspire your egg painting, you may want to explore the Eastern European egg-painting tradition of Pysanky. On the Learn Psyanky website, you will find different symbols and designs that you can paint on eggs. Once you are done painting your eggs and they have dried, you can arrange them in an Easter basket or a bowl for decoration.

    Wooden Spoons

    • Another project that you can paint is a wooden spoon, which you can buy at a craft store. By painting and decorating a wooden spoon, you can turn the spoon into whatever you like, such as a person, an animal or an insect. Rockport Publishers' book, "Painting and Decorating Wooden Spoons: 100 Step-by-Step Projects for Making People, Animals, and Fantasy Characters from Wooden Spoons," has information on how to go about painting wooden craft spoons. Basic materials that are needed for this project include wooden craft spoons, acrylic paints, cardboard or plywood and sandpaper.
