Scriptures That Help Deal With Grief thumbnail
Many people turn to the Bible to help them through the grieving process.

Grieving the loss of a loved one is among the most difficult things that we do in our lives. That is why so many people rely on their faith to see them through their grief. There are scripture passages that people turn to time and time again to help them deal with their sadness and grief, and to gain hope again.

  1. Promise of Everlasting Life

    • The very foundation of Christianity is the concept that believers will enter heaven and have everlasting life. This can be of much comfort to grieving survivors, as they can trust that their loved ones are at peace.

      John 14:1-4

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

      Hosea 13:14

"I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave, is your destruction?"

      Isaiah 25:8

"He will swallow up death forever. The sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The Lord has spoken."

    God's Love

    • People also find it comforting that, although we are enduring tragedy, God is still a part of our lives and he loves us unconditionally.

      Isaiah 49:14-16

"But Zion said, 'The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.' Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me."

      Psalm 138:7

"Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me."

    Relying Upon God

    • People often find comfort when scripture reminds them to trust in God, and cast all of their troubles and sorrows on him, rather than trying to deal with difficult times on their own.

      Proverbs 3:5

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

      Isaiah 41:13

"For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you fear not, I will help you."

      Psalm 55:22

"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall."

    Hope For Ourselves

    • Part of bereavement of loved ones is a bit of our own fear of death and dying. Many people find comfort in scriptures that talk about hope for believers and strength in faith.

      1 Peter 1: 8-9

"Though now you do not see him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith the salvation of your souls."

      John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life."
