Yo-Yo Quilt Ideas
A yo-yo quilt is different than a traditional pieced quilt. Round yo-yos are formed by cutting out circles of fabric and sewing a narrow hem. The fabric is then gathered and puckered to create the yo-yo. To cut out yo-yos, use a plate that is about twice as large as the desired finished size. Look for special yo-yo tools in the quilting section of the fabric store. Use the yo-yos for different quilting ideas.

Reversible
-
Make a reversible yo-yo quilt. To do this, you will need to make twice as many yo-yos because you will put them on the front and the back of the quilt. After making your yo-yos, sew them together end-to-end as you normally would. Sew the yo-yos into rows and then sew the rows together making two separate quilt tops. When you layer the two quilts together, you will have to hand sew the yo-yos together back to back. If you want the stitches to show, use yarn or embroidery thread. If you do not want the stitches to show, use regular thread and sew together using a simple knot.
Backed Throw
-
A backed throw will add a little warmth to your yo-yo quilt, since it is rather holey. Put the top of the yo-yo quilt together as usual, stitching the yo-yos together by hand. When adding the backing, try to find a piece of fabric that will completely cover the back without having to be pieced together. If the quilt is wider than any backing fabric you can find, look for a flat sheet in a color that coordinates with the fabric of the yo-yos. To hold the two layers together, stitch through the middle of the yo-yo to the back of the backing. Add a binding along the edges to make them look neat.

Unbacked Quilt
-
Stitch all your yo-yos together to make the quilt top. Do not add any backing or batting for a different look. Make sure the stitches are strong by using heavy duty thread. This type of yo-yo quilt is best used as a decoration. It can be folded and put on the back of a couch or chair or as a bed topper over a plain bedspread. It would also make a good decorative tablecloth.
Pillows
-
A quilted pillow can add to the look of the room, especially if you have a yo-yo quilt already. Stitch enough yo-yos together to make a square that is slightly larger as a pillow form. Before assembling the pillow, it is necessary to add a backing fabric to the yo-yos by basting the yo-yos and the backing around the edges. You will also need another piece of plain fabric for the back of the pillow. Sew the front and back, with right sides together, along three sides. After turning the pillow cover right side out, insert a pillow form. Sew the top closed.
