Easy Crafts for VBS

Vacation Bible School, or VBS, is typically a week-long summer day camp for children. These camps are offered by many local Christian churches, and aim to teach children about the Bible, scriptures and Jesus' word, all while incorporating fun games, songs and crafts into the curriculum. There are a variety of easy crafts to do at Vacation Bible School.

WWJD Bracelet

  • WWJD stands for "What Would Jesus Do." The idea behind wearing WWJD on a bracelet is that it will remind children to make good, sound decisions whenever they are faced with a choice. Using embroidery floss and letter beads, students can create their own WWJD bracelets in whatever colors they choose. This is a fun, easy craft that the students will enjoy wearing the rest of their summer.

Yarn Crosses

  • Another Christian symbol is the cross; this symbol and its meaning are often discussed at length at Vacation Bible School. Many Christians display crosses in their homes, so this craft allows students to create their own cross for either their bedrooms or another room in their homes. Simply take two craft sticks, and wrap them in yarn; allow the students to choose a color of their liking. The cross can be decorated using gemstones or other embellishments.

Paper Plate Suncatcher

  • This is an easy and fun craft for younger students attending Vacation Bible School. Give each student a paper plate, and allow him to cut out a shape. It could be a circle, star, square or any other shape he desires. Then, have him choose a piece of colored tissue paper. Glue the tissue paper to the back side of the plate. Punch a hole at the top of the plate, and string a piece of yarn through it. When it hangs, the students will be able to see the sunlight come through the shape they created.

Scripture Jar

  • This is a meaningful craft for students at Vacation Bible School. Often, the week-long camp focuses on a variety of different scriptures. Have the students write out their favorite 10 to 15 scriptures, and fold them up and place them in an old mason jar. Allow them to decorate the jar as they please. Encourage them to use the jar in the future, when they may be having a hard time or need extra encouragement. The scriptures in the jar will be there to guide them.
