Requirements for a Public Defender in Missouri
To work in the Missouri State Public Defender System as a public defender, the individual must have a license to practice law in the state. Lawyers must pass the Missouri Bar to obtain a license and apply to the state to work as a public defender. Indigent citizens of the state can obtain legal representation from the Missouri State Public Defender System.

Juris Doctor Degree

To qualify for the Missouri State Bar Examination, candidates must have a minimum of a Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. Students graduating from law school receive the J.D. degree. Missouri requires that the candidate's official transcripts be sent to the Missouri Board of Law Examiners in order to be eligible for admission to the Missouri Bar. The transcripts must state the date on which the candidate received the J.D. degree.
Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination

Candidates for the Missouri bar must score a minimum of 80 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) before the Missouri Board of Law Examiners will admit the lawyer. The examination tests the candidate's knowledge of the American Bar Association codes on judicial and professional conduct, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The candidate must submit scores within one year of passing the bar examination.

Missouri Bar Examination

The candidate must complete and pass the Multistate Bar Examination, Multistate Essay Examination and the Multistate Performance Test to gain admission to the Missouri Bar. The Multistate Essay Examination consists of essay questions in areas such as constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, business associations, contracts, torts, property, trusts and estates and the Uniform Commercial Code. The Multistate Performance Test consists of two questions, which require the candidate to perform legal analysis, problem solving, fact analysis, organization of a legal task, resolution of an ethical dilemma and legal communication skills. Each question requires 90 minutes to complete. The Multistate Bar Examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions in areas such as criminal law, constitutional law, torts, contracts and real property. The examination takes six hours to complete.

The lawyer seeking a position with the Missouri State Public Defender System must complete an application and include his Missouri Bar number on the application. Applicants who have not completed the requirements for admittance to the Missouri Bar must disclose the date upon which they anticipate licensure to practice in the state.
