A fitness photo shoot should highlight the model's fitness and overall good health. To lend the photos credibility, it is important to ensure models working with equipment or performing poses are using correct form; it may help to have an additional, knowledgeable person on-site during the shoot to make sure that the models are posed correctly. The photo shoot should be set up so that there are limited distracting items in the pictures because this takes focus away from the models.
A solid-colored, seamless backdrop will provide the cleanest background for a fitness photo shoot, but it is not always convenient when gym equipment is being used in the photos. When shooting in a gym, remove as much clutter as possible to avoid it appearing in the pictures. This includes wall paintings and other decor items, water bottles and any free weights or other fitness equipment not specifically needed for each photo.
Models are typically tanned for a fitness photo shoot. Enhancing the skin color via a real or spray tan gives a sleeker, more refined look to the model. It serves to even out skin tones that might otherwise be distracting in the photo. Makeup should be natural looking, not overdone and give the model a healthy, vibrant appearance.
Use of Weights and Machinery
Use real weights rather than light prop weights that are made out of styrofoam or other material. This will ensure that the model's muscles are actually straining rather than just pretending to be. This will enhance the model's muscles and highlight their fitness by making it more visible to the camera.
Clean All Surfaces
Clean and polish all of the equipment that will be used in the photo shoot, as well as any equipment that may appear in the picture's background. Wipe fingerprints and smudges off of all mirrors, windows and metal surfaces. If not using a backdrop, ensure that the floors and walls that will appear in the pictures are clean and free of scrapes, nicks and footprints. Hardwood floors should be polished.
Avoid baggy and loose clothing. A snug-fitting wardrobe will highlight the model's fitness by allowing muscle definition to show through the clothing. This also creates smooth lines, keeping the photo neat and focused the fitness subject. Loose fitting shorts and t-shirts can bunch and wrinkle, giving photos an unkempt appearance.
