Los Angeles, California, has one of the most prolific music scenes in the world, with hundreds of venues for live music. The "City of Angels" was also the birthplace of various genres of music, such as gangster rap and heavy metal. Numerous bands and singers began their careers in Los Angeles, including Dwight Yoakam, Van Halen and Metallica.

  1. Country Western

    • Cowboy Palace Saloon (cowboypalace.com) is in Los Angeles' Chatsworth area, located in the San Fernando Valley. This saloon venue hosts live country western music seven nights a week. Cowboy Palace features local country acts and nationally known bands, including the Dixie Chicks and Johny Paycheck. All patrons must be at least 21 years old.

      Situated in Long Beach, the Cowboy Country Saloon (cowboycountry.mu) is five minutes south of the Artesia Freeway. This bar offers live country western entertainment on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. Also on these nights, Cowboy Country provides dance lessons; dancing styles include line dancing and cowboy cha cha.

    Jazz

    • Ivan Kane's Cafe Was (cafewas.com) is on the corner of Vine Street and Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles' Hollywood neighborhood. This jazz bar features a grand piano in the middle of the dining room. Every Saturday night, the bar's resident artist, J.R. Rotem, plays at Ivan Kane's with his jazz quartet.

      Downtown Los Angeles is home to Matsumoto's 2nd Street Jazz (2ndstjazz.com), which is in the heart of Little Tokyo. This jazz bar provides jazz music from Japanese and Latin jazz musicians throughout the month. This bar allows patrons 18 years or older for live music shows; all patrons must be at least 21 on non-music nights.

    Acoustic

    • The Hotel Cafe (hotelcafe.com) is right off Cahuenga Boulevard in the Hollywood district. This bar has been featured on the Carson Daly Show and the Los Angeles Times. Local singers and music bands play at the Hotel Cafe every night of the week. All patrons must be 21 years or older. This venue hosts several artists per night; each music act receives 30 minutes to an hour stage time.

      Molly Malone's (mollymalonesla.com) is an Irish-themed pub on Fairfax in Los Angeles' Carthay Square area. This pub opened in 1969 and hosts acoustic rock, reggae and pop-genre singers. Most of the bands that play at Molly Malone's are local acts. Malone's offers live shows on Mondays through Saturdays.

    Sunset Strip Rock

    • The Roxy Theater (theroxyonsunset.com) is near the corner of Sunset and Doheny in West Hollywood. This theater features a semi-circle stage for live music. Before each band performs, a large semi-circle curtain is drawn to reveal the musicians. Partons must be at least 21 years old to attend shows.

      Whiskey a Go Go (whiskyagogo.com) is on the corner of Sunset and San Vincente. This legendary rock club has hosted music acts such as The Doors, Alice Cooper and Guns 'N Roses. Local and nationally renowned artists continue to play at this bar.

      The Viper Room (viperroom.com) on Sunset Strip features hard rock bands. Most of the bands at Viper Room are local Los Angeles bands. The Viper Room has an entrance on Sunset Boulevard and Larrabee Street.
