Text messaging can be a simple way to communicate without talking.

There are four types of mobile messaging. Understanding what MMS and SMS are can be confusing to people that are new to cell phone use. These text message types are different in various ways. You may or may not have these types of functions, depending on what type of phone and carrier you have.

  1. SMS and MMS Definition

    • SMS stands for Short Message Delivery. This type of message is widely used with all types of phones and carriers. The MMS message has evolved from the SMS message and it stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. You can take a picture and send it along with a message to a friend or family member and show them where you are or what you're seeing.

    SMS and MMS Capacity

    • You can send up to 160 characters to another phone in a SMS message, and if you want the message to be longer, it is split up and sent into another message. With the MMS message you can send the 160 characters plus your video, picture or audio content.

    Message Cost

    • The SMS messages are the cheapest of all messages. These can also be used to link other services, such as Google or MSN. You can also receive spam in these types of messages. In order to receive MMS messages, you have to have a multimedia package or camera phone.

    Requirements

    • In order to receive MMS messages you have to have multimedia package or camera phone. Some of these messages may not be received or sent because of the service providers. These messages carry a larger content of information so the process of sending or receiving a MMS message may take longer to upload or download.
