Kids love colored icing -- why not make it more natural by using beets or berries to color it pink.

More and more people are beginning to move away from chemical food dyes to color icing and other food items, and are choosing other natural options. Natural food dyes are becoming more popular due to people being allergic to regular food dye, not liking the taste or wanting a more natural diet. Many foods that we consume on a daily basis and have around the house can be used to color icing. Add this to my Recipe Box.

  1. Red and Pink

    • Red and pink icing are the easiest colors to achieve when using natural ingredients. Some natural substitutes for red food coloring include beets, pomegranate juice, canned cherries and raspberries. The juices of these items can be used to color or they can be pureed and added to the icing for a more vibrant color and flavor. To make the icing pink instead of red, simply add less of the coloring agent.

    Green

    • Two different shades of green can be obtained with ingredients other than food coloring -- pastel green and deep green. To achieve a pastel green color, puree avocado and blend it into your icing. The avocado doesn't add much flavor and provides a smooth texture. Drained or pureed spinach and liquid chlorophyll can both be used to color icing to a deep green color.

    Blue

    • A true royal blue color is very difficult to achieve using food coloring substitutes, but shades of blue are possible. The ingredients to produce the best blue color in icing are canned blueberries or purple grape juice. The juice or puree from the canned blueberries can be used to dye the icing.

    Yellow

    • Many different spices and produce items are able to color icing yellow. Ingredients such as orange or lemon peels, tumeric, cumin and boiled and strained carrots all work to color icing yellow. Be careful when using spices as they can strongly impact the flavor of the icing.

    Brown

    • Brown icing can easily be made by adding cocoa powder. Espresso or coffee can also be used to color icing tan or brown.
