Funny Wedding Toast Tips

The best man and maid of honor traditionally make toasts.

Toasts can be either the high point or low point of a wedding reception. You want to make guests laugh, but it can be nerve-wracking to speak in front of a crowd. Practice your toast at least twice in front of a few close friends. They can tell you what's working and not working, and you can practice your comedic timing.

  1. Tell a Story

    • A story allows you to give some background about your relationship with the couple, and it's also a way to add humor to your toast without seeming to try too hard. Choose a story of a funny memory you share together, or tell the story of the first time you met either the bride or groom. Play it safe and avoid any references to alcohol or past relationships. Feel free to add a little embellishment to make the story funnier. Only you and the couple will know, and they'll be too happy to notice.

    Make a List

    • Make guests laugh by reading a list of five or 10 reasons the bride is crazy to be marrying your friend. Don't insult him directly, but point out some of his quirks like the fact that his socks never match. It's also possible to take a more serious topic and make it into a humorous list. Write a list of the five reasons you know they're meant to be together. Make the first four reasons silly, such as the fact that they're both such picky eaters that no one else can stand eating with them. End on a serious reason you think they're made to be.

    Use Quotes

    • Quoting other people can help you get laughs without having to come up with any of your own material. Collect humorous quotes about love and marriage. To make the speech more personal, interview the bridal party and the couple's families before the wedding. Ask what they think about the couple and what they're looking forward to about the wedding. You should get at least a few humorous quotes. Read off the best quotes, adding a little personal commentary after each.

    Add Photos

    • If you're savvy with a computer, you can incorporate photos or videos into your toast. Find funny pictures of the couple together or when they were younger. Write a speech about all the reasons you're confident they'll have a successful marriage. Coordinate photos to go with each moment. For instance, when you say "I know that Joe is mature enough to enter into marriage ..." post a picture of him playing a childish prank on someone. Put all the photos into a slide show, then coordinate with the reception venue so that they can project your slide show onto a screen.
