What Kind of Business Degrees Are Companies Looking for When They Hire Managers? thumbnail
Hiring managers may seek applicants with a particular business degree.

Companies that seek management candidates often look for a certain type of educational background. They consider the knowledge requirements of the job, type of education degree, relevancy of that degree and the school from which the degree was obtained. These considerations help to determine a person's relative value on the market. Value on the market equates to job offers and income.

  1. Knowledge Requirements

    • Management employees are expected to have a wide range of basic knowledge in the areas of accounting, psychology, management principles, business theory, human resource management and liability. Business degrees that associate closely to these basic knowledge requirements are often highly valued in the job market.

    Degree Type

    • The type of degree an individual attains is of paramount importance. For example, a master's of business administration (MBA) degree in business management is appropriate for most management positions. Hiring managers, however, may look for an applicant who earned an MBA with a concentration in human resource management, accounting or any number of other areas that more narrowly focuses on the industry associated with the job opening. A master's degree is quickly becoming a minimum requirement to obtain management positions. It certifies that the graduate has a minimum knowledge level.

    Degree Relevancy

    • A degree's relevancy relates to the particular industry and how closely the degree matches the requirements of that industry. For example, someone who wants to work in human resource management should obtain an MBA of human resources, just as a master's of finance degree is relevant to work in a finance department. If you are unaware of the specific field in which you will work, then a general business degree or management degree is appropriate. Students are encouraged to start broad and narrow their focus later in their college programs.

    School

    • The school from which the degree was earned is as important as the type and relevancy of the degree. Ivy League school graduates have more opportunities than community college graduates. Where someone went to school results in a wide variation in the amount of job offers he receives and the pay associated with those offers. If you seek a quick path of growth, then attending an Ivy League school may be the best approach. If that is not an option due to finances or time, then consider public or private schools with strong reputations. The type of school you choose depends on your time, family situation, finances, prior education level and test scores.
