Cadets
-
Maryland's State Police Cadet program is designed for those aged 18 to 20 who want to learn trooper skills that they can use when they apply for full positions at age 21. Though this position unclassified in terms of rank and employment, the years spent here count toward retirement. This means those who are hired at age 18 and then continue as Troopers can receive a full pension at age 40. The starting salary for this position as of April 2011 is $23,524 per year. Cadets are normally assigned to duties that do not require police authority, such as commercial vehicle enforcement.
Salaries
-
Maryland State Troopers use the same pay tables as other law enforcement officers for the state, though with slightly different designations. Trooper pay starts at scale 0050 and continues on to 0061, while those for other officers range from 0120 to 0129. In both cases, steps are used within scales to further differentiate salaries. The lowest pay classification, which is used for recruits entering the Academy, pays $40,207 per year. The highest salaries are $124,387. This is for Fiscal Year 2011, effective June 30, 2010, which represents a temporary reduction in regular salaries.
