What Can the Apple iPad Do?

The iPad can be used at home, or on the go.

You may think it's the greatest invention since sliced bread, or just another way for Steve Jobs to pinch a few more pennies from the technologically intrigued, but either way the Apple iPad is here to stay. Featuring 65,000 applications and growing, the Apple iPad can entertain you, educate you and help keep you organized on a daily basis.

  1. Wireless Web

    • The Apple iPad connects to the Internet through a Wi-Fi connection, allowing you to have wireless Internet access wherever a Wi-Fi signal can be located. Once connected, you can utilize the iPad the same way you would a computer. Surfing the web, downloading content, checking your bank account, updating your Facebook profile and more can all be accomplished with an Apple iPad. The LED-backlit 9.7 inch diagonal screen and touch-screen keyboard make web surfing easy on the eyes and easy on the fingers. The iPad is 7.5 inches wide and 9.5 inches tall, placing it between an iPhone and a laptop in terms of size.

    A Picture Of Silliness

    • The iPad 2 has the ability to snap and share photos; however, on any version you can also tweak these photos and create a hilarious slide show utilizing the built-in Photo Booth application. Using the front-facing camera, take a photo of yourself or a friend or use one downloaded from your computer. You can then add effects to your photo, such as X-ray, stretch, squeeze or kaleidoscope. These effects alter your image, much like a fun house mirror would. All photos will be saved to your personal photo library, and can be sent to friends and family.

    Move Over Kindle

    • The iPad works as a virtual bookstore or library -- much like the Kindle -- with over 200,000 books ready to be downloaded from the iBook store. Many of the books are free to download once you have the iBooks application, which can be downloaded from the App Store. You may browse books by genre, author or title. Books that were intended to be in color -- such as children's books -- will appear in color on the iPad screen. Holding the iPad upright allows you to view one page at a time. Flip the iPad on its side, and you can view two pages at a time. Text can be adjusted -- either smaller or larger -- and books can be read to you through VoiceOver in case you need to give your eyes a rest.

    Old School Gaming

    • The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii feature state-of-the-art graphics and sound, but some gamers still prefer the old school feel of classic video games. The Atari's Greatest Hits application allows you to play classic arcade video games in the palm of your hand such as Pong and Pac-Man. For $14.99 as of 2011, you can purchase 100 Atari and Atari 2600 video games to be played anywhere, anytime. You can also play against others in multi-player mode. The iPad features a 10-hour battery life, allowing you to play your favorite classic games for stretches at a time.
