Medical Oncology Associations

Thousands of oncology physicians and practitioners belong to specialized medical associations.

Oncologists deal primarily with patients who have cancer or tumors. Other medical professionals can specialize in the field as well, including nurses and researchers. Any medical professional working in oncology can become a member of an industry association in order to stay on top of new research, take advantage of educational opportunities, earn grants and awards, and network with other oncology specialists.

  1. American Society of Clinical Oncology

    • The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is the premier national medical oncology association. The nonprofit organization was originally founded in 1964 and still carries its original purpose of improving cancer care around the country. Approximately 30,000 physicians, surgeons, nurses and other medical professionals working in the field of oncology belong to the association. Membership provides them with access to research resources and career opportunities, as well as continuing education and certification resources.

    State Oncology Associations

    • Many states have their own individual associations or societies related to the medical branch of oncology. Some examples include the Medical Oncology Association of Southern California and the Illinois Medical Oncology Society. These nonprofit organizations are designed to represent physicians and educational institutions supporting the practice of oncology in a particular region. Many statewide and regional associations sponsor meetings where members can get together, network and listen to speakers. Many such associations also provide members with access to new research in the field as well as regional job opportunities.

    Oncology Nursing Society

    • Physicians are not the only medical professionals who can specialize in oncology. The Oncology Nursing Society represents those nurses who are dedicated to treating cancer patients and promoting preventive care. The organization has more than 35,000 members, most of whom are registered nurses or nurse educators specializing in oncology. The association offers scholarships, grants and awards to members pursuing research in oncology nursing. More than $500,000 worth of awards are available.

    Specialty Oncology Associations

    • Oncology is a broad field that encompasses many professions. Some additional associations related to the field include the American Society for Radiation Oncology, which specifically represents those medical professionals who work to treat cancer with radiation therapy, and the Hematology Oncology Pharmacy Association, which is designed for those pharmacy practitioners who work with cancer patients. Another type of association related to oncology is the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians, which represents those medical practitioners who use natural or alternative means to treat cancer.
