As temperatures rise, many people prefer to eat meals that are lighter than traditional cold weather favorites. The warm sunshine also makes it more difficult to stay in the kitchen for hours on end preparing complex dishes. The best meals to make on a hot day tend to be quick and easy to prepare with fresh and light ingredients.
Fresh Salads and Fruit
Perhaps the most obvious choice for a meal on a hot day is the classic fresh salad. If you are in the mood for something sweet, fresh fruit is a healthy and light option. For a twist, try freezing fruits like strawberries or mangos before enjoying them, as an especially refreshing treat. Also, take advantage of the produce in season for your area. The flavors are usually more delicious than produce that is out of season.
Less is More
To cut down on cooking time, incorporate fewer ingredients into your dishes. You can make a very tasty meal using only a few items. For example, you can grill or sauté your favorite protein and serve it over hummus. You can also make a quick pasta dish by drizzling an herb and olive oil mix over a bowl of pasta. Another option is to slice some chilled hard boiled eggs and serve them with a vegetable.
Mix it Up
Don't forget to make use of your blender on a hot day. In addition to delicious smoothies, you can also blend cold soups and sauces. A popular choice for a hot day is pesto sauce. You can pour pesto over pasta, grilled fish or meat. Combine a couple of cups of basil leaves with a garlic clove, salt, pepper and olive oil in your blender. Add parmesan cheese and walnuts if you like.
Keep it Cool
With a little bit of prep, you can enjoy a chilled version of some of your favorite warm meals. If you want a cold pasta dish for dinner, cook the pasta in the morning, and let it cool in the refrigerator throughout the day. You can also grill or boil your vegetables in advance, and all of your ingredients will be ready to cool you down after a hot day.
Sandwiches, wraps and quesadillas are all excellent choices for meals on a hot day. These options are great because they are fast and simple to make. Also, if you are preparing meals for others, sandwiches, wraps and quesadillas can be easily customizable to suit anyone's taste, and the ingredients can be assembled moments before they are devoured.
