Although many little boys long for the expensive toys advertised in commercials, you can bring longer-lasting satisfaction with a homemade gift. Your options for a homemade gift for five- to seven-year-old boys are many and varied; just use your imagination to create a gift that's sure to delight.
Most kids, especially boys, love to eat. Find a large tin divided into three or four sections, then bake a different treat for each section; for example, brownies, rice cereal pastries and chocolate chip cookies. Or, hold a little party for him and two or three friends. Let them set the menu, and you can cook whatever they ask for. Or, make him his own little cocoa kit. Get a cellophane cone and use dry ingredients to create different layers.
Find an old sweater, cut a long, thick strip from it, then sew a length of fleece on the inside to create a little boy-sized scarf. You could also make him a memory blanket. Ask his mother for his old clothing, then cut each piece into squares. Sew the squares together and back them with a soft material. You can also make your special boy a rugged-looking backpack with an old burlap sack. Cut two 1-by-1 foot squares and sew them together, leaving the top fourth open. Sew a zipper into the top fourth. Cut two thick strips from the original bag. Arrange the strips parallel to one another on either side and attach one end of the strips to the top and the other to the bottom. You've got a one-of-a-kind backpack.
Get a 2-by-4 and use it to carve wooden toys for your special boy. You don't need to be a professional carpenter; simply make him a set of different-shaped block toys or a set of alphabet blocks. Or, make a stuffed animal from felt and craft store cotton. Pick your animal, buy the different colors of felt and sew the pieces together accordingly, leaving an opening at the top. Stuff the animal carefully with the cotton, then sew it shut.
Make your special boy a batch of multicolored homemade play dough using flour, salt, water, oil, cream of tartar and food coloring. Or, stitch a dream catcher to hang over his bed; explain the superstition behind it to get him interested. Also, find a large cardboard box and use paint and decorative touches to create a spaceship or a small playhouse for your special boy.
For a busy little boy, create a personalized calendar using a sketching pad. Use a ruler to make the lines and boxes. On the top portion, you can draw him a picture, leave it blank for him to decorate or attach an envelope with a coupon inside. Tell him he can redeem the coupons for an ice cream (or other small treat).
