List of Senior Project Ideas

Some senior projects can help give graduating teenagers a sense of direction as they enter college.

The senior project provides a learning experience beyond the classroom walls. Typically, the high school senior chooses a field that he is interested in researching, gathers data to complete a thesis and then does field work to complete the project. The senior must meet a certain number of contact or volunteer hours to obtain credits toward the project. He then presents the project portfolio to a panel for judging.

  1. Volunteer at a Crisis Center

    • Most seniors are not qualified to directly counsel patients, but they can assist counselors and learn valuable information working in the environment. A senior might be in charge of greeting and registering patients, supervising patients' children or sitting with and calming patients during the wait. Seniors can develop journals of their experiences while at the center, omitting patients' names. The journals should include both observable facts and their impressions and feelings during the experience.

    Write and Direct a Play

    • If a senior has a creative side, she might try her hand as a playwright for a senior project. She will need to decide on a plot to develop and manage her time efficiently to write several drafts of the play before auditions. The senior will have to work with the drama department to hold auditions and secure judges to help choose the best actors. She will also have to schedule times after school and weekends for practice. Throughout this process, the senior will develop the authoritative skills needed to direct a production.

    Teach Babysitting Classes

    • Many teenagers have had experience babysitting at some point. A senior might develop a project to teach younger pre-teens how to babysit. The senior can work with two or three friends with babysitting experience to assist with this project. The seniors might contact local middle schools or after-school programs to set up times and groups of interested individuals who want to learn about baby sitting. Then, the group can prepare brochures with babysitting tips and develop role play scenarios that the younger students will remember when accepting babysitting jobs.

    Landscape the School

    • This project is closely related to horticulture and agriculture. The senior should work closely with the school's maintenance department to locate a section of the school grounds that will benefit from landscaping. He should develop a plan by drawing out a sketch of the completed landscaped area, including types of trees, bushes and flowers. The senior should designate a day to purchase the materials and a day to plant. He can also organize friends or volunteers to help on those days.
