West Jet Flight Restrictions

Review your flight's travel restrictions before packing your suitcase.

WestJet is a Canadian airline that had its start in 1996. The airline has flights that travel to destinations in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. If you are flying a WestJet flight, you should familiarize yourself with WestJet flight regulations and with what is and is not permitted on board a plane.

  1. Carry-on and Checked Luggage

    • WestJet flights allow you to bring two carry-on bags (free of charge) on the airplane. The bags cannot exceed a weight of 22 pounds (10 kilograms). Your carry-on bags must fit into the sizing device at the airport, and they must fit into overhead or under the seat compartments on the airplane. For a checked bag, your bag must not exceed 50 pounds (23 kilograms). On most WestJet flights, passengers are allowed up to three additional checked bags, but there is a fee for each additional bag.

    Liquids, Gels and Aerosols

    • WestJet has specific requirements related to liquid container sizes. Liquids, gels and aerosols must be stored in containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in size. Examples of such items include beverages, soups, creams, foams, hair gels, shower gels, deodorants and sprays. Liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed into a clear, resealable plastic bag up to a quart in size. You may take baby formula, baby food or baby milk on a WestJet flight for children two years of age or younger. These items do not need to be placed in a plastic bag and are not subject to the restrictions of the 3.4-ounce container size. Prescription and nonprescription medicine are also exempt from the plastic bag and 3.4-ounce container size requirements; however, a prescription medicine's label must match the name of its owner.

    Printer or Toner Cartridges

    • Passengers on WestJet flights are not permitted to pack certain-sized printer or toner cartridges in checked bags. Printer or toner cartridges that weigh 17.6 ounces (500 grams) or more are banned, but smaller toner cartridges (for home printers) are still allowed in checked bags. If you are a passenger flying from Canada to the United States, you are prohibited from packing cartridges in carry-on bags.

    Lighters

    • WestJet flights allow you to bring cigarette lighters in carry-on bags. The types of cigarette lighters that are permitted are disposable or liquid-fueled lighters, such as Bic or Zippo. You must present your cigarette lighter to airport security screening and have it packed in the same clear, resealable bag as your liquids, gels and aerosols. You cannot pack lighters in your checked baggage and you cannot bring any other types of lighters besides disposable or liquid-fueled ones in your carry-on luggage.

    Personal Tools and Weapons

    • Multi-tools (like Swiss Army knives) that contain knives or knife blades are not permitted on WestJet flights. You are, however, able to bring round-tipped scissors of any length and small, sharp-tipped scissors with blades measuring 2.4 inches in length. Your are not allowed to bring hammers or saws, but you can travel with small tools (like eyeglass screwdrivers) with a head and shaft that measure, from joint to tip, 2.4 inches in length. Toy guns that do not resemble real weapons are permitted, while weapon replicas are forbidden on WestJet flights. You cannot take any electo-shock weapons, such as Tasers, in either carry-on or checked luggage.
