Day Camps for Special Needs Kids
It is beneficial for a child with special needs to experience day camp, because they will be in a comfortable environment to build confidence and social skills. Many kids who don't have disabilities get to enjoy day camp, so those with special needs should be able to do the same. Participating in the fun activities of day camp will help the kids enjoy being kids.

Dream Oaks Camp

Kids with physical and developmental disabilities could attend the Dream Oaks summer day camp, located in Bradenton, Florida, a few miles from the Florida coast. According to their abilities, campers can participate in various activities like arts and crafts, swimming, sports, campfires, talent shows and more. Lunch is served daily. As of April 2011, the cost of each five-day session is $400.
Camp Merrimack

Camp Merrimack is a four-day arts camp for children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and other disabilities. The program accepts children ages 3 to 12, and they will participate in dance, music, theater, visual arts, in addition to enhancing their social skills. Kids aged 3 to 7 attend the camp from 9 a.m. to noon, while kids aged 8 to 12 attend camp from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. As of 2009, the cost is $40 per child. Camp Merrimack is located in Huntsville, Alabama.

Camp Starfish

Located in Lancaster, Massachusetts, this day camp is for children aged 5 to 12 who have learning disabilities, anger issues, depression, autism and a host of other special needs. During the program they will learn coping and social skills, all while having fun. The kids will be in small groups, with one staffer assigned to two kids. Sessions are four days, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Each session costs $285 as of April 2011.

Children who have physical and mental disabilities and injuries may attend this five-day camp in Mayville, Michigan. Campers participate in various outdoor activities such as horseback riding, archery, campfires, rock wall climbing, gardening and swimming, in addition to arts and crafts, pottery, music and drama. Day camp hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. As of April 2011, the cost of day camp is $150.

Kids aged 7 to 17 who have Asperger's syndrome, autism and other communicative disabilities are encouraged to attend this four-week camp, located in Belmont, Massachusetts. According to the camp's website, "children develop social skills through fun activities, such as drama, arts and crafts, communication games, swimming and field trips---all within a therapeutic context." Day camp hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pre-camp and post-camp hours are 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch and snacks are provided. As of April 2011, the camp costs $4,500.
