Batman and Friends
-
Batman and his superhero friends wear flashy thematic costumes to aid in their nightly crusade against criminals. The classic Batman costume with cowl, cape and utility belt is still considered one of the best superhero outfits because it portrays Batman as a giant bat lurking in the shadows. If you like more color in your costumes, dress as Batman's sidekick Robin instead, with a red shirt, green tights and yellow cape. Other friends of Batman include partners like Nightwing and Batgirl, occasional allies, like Catwoman and Superman, or citizens of Gotham City, like Alfred and Commissioner Gordon.
Villains
-
Some of the best-dressed characters in the Batman comics are the villains he battles. The Joker is known for his colorful green hair, purple suit and clown makeup, which is a stark contrast to Batman's dark nature. Characters like Two Face and The Penguin give you the opportunity to use stage makeup or possibly prosthetic makeup to achieve a deformed monstrous look. Batman's villains come in all shapes and sizes, from scrawny Scarecrow to bulky Bane. Batman also fights with female villains, including the clown-faced Harley Quinn and the green-thumbed Poison Ivy.

Movie and TV Batman Costumes
-
Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker included a grittier costume and makeup choice than previous versions. The Batman movies and TV shows offer alternate ideas for costumes. The Batman suit in recent Batman movies looks armored, while the suit worn by Adam West in the 1960s TV series was made from bright-colored cloth. The differences between two versions of the same character often can be very stark. The Joker, from the movie "The Dark Knight," had stringy greasy hair, dark circles under his eyes and a big red scar for a smile, instead of the colorful, flamboyant Joker seen in previous movies.
Alternate Costumes
-
With so many different Batman comics, movies, cartoons and TV shows in existence, there are many alternate versions of the character to choose from. Instead of Bruce Wayne as Batman, dress as Terry McGinnis, the future version of Batman from "Batman Beyond," who wears a red and black full-body Batman suit with wings under the arms. The critically acclaimed graphic novel by Frank Miller, "The Dark Knight Returns," featured an older Batman in a bulky armored suit with a young red-headed girl named Carrie taking on the role of Robin. Dig through the Batman universe to find unusual versions of the Batman characters to inspire your costumes.
