Ideas for Fundraising for Disaster Victims

Disaster victims have to deal with more than physical injuries.

Disaster victims often lose everything they own. Just getting food to eat can be tough for them. Raise money to help them pay for food, clothes, water and shelter. Start a fundraising campaign. Consider the investment that you have to put into any fundraising campaign versus what you expect to get in return. Smaller investment projects have less risk, but the return isn't as high. High-risk investment present greater risk, but you have the potential of raising lots more money.

  1. Concert

    • Concerts are a high-risk fundraising campaign because of the time it takes to organize the event. It doesn't have to be high cost. Some performers are willing to perform for free. If you can convince venue owners to rent space and equipment for a discount or at no cost, then you have minimized your expenses. Local municipalities may allow you to use parks for your concert fundraiser. Tap local bands and talent first. Then contact talent agents of more popular performers. Agency contact information is printed in publications like the "Hollywood Reporter." Raise funds by charging admission and selling refreshments. If you have it in your budget, sell merchandise such as T-shirts and hats.

    Game Tournaments

    • Sponsor a night of games. Games can be Olympic style, in which there are several different sports and levels of competition with games such as relay races, basketball and tennis. You can also schedule a series of nights of games such as a soccer night or a baseball night. This fundraiser serves two purposes. Disaster victims get to enjoy a night of fun and relieve some stress by kicking or batting balls. You also get to charge for refreshments or an admission fee to the game. Ask a local sports figure to sign autographs for a fee and donate that fee to the disaster victims.

    Tin Cans

    • Going door to door with a tin can and asking for donations still works. Explain to people your cause and they will give to you. Most likely, they have seen it on the news. Get a logo for your organization and register it as a nonprofit organization with the government so that people know you are legit. To register as a nonprofit, you will need to file a form 501(c)3 with the IRS. You may even consider a website that you can refer people to for donations if they are leery of giving a stranger money. The website can explain how you plan to use the money to help disaster victims. Print business cards with the website address to pass out to people. Set up a booth in front of a public transportation station and ask for donations.

    Auctions

    • Sell goods through auctions to raise money. Ask for donations from prominent members of the community and celebrities who live in your area. They can donate paintings, cars, clothes and jewelry. You can also set up a website to accept auction bids online. You can also find valuable items to auction at estate sales.
