Many women reenter the workforce after having children. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, two-thirds of all women with children under the age of 17 are employed either full time or part time. The best jobs combine all three qualities.

  1. Child Care Worker

    • Child care workers assist in the care of babies and young children when a parent is at work at school. A job as a child care worker can help earn a salary while caring for your own child as well. Many child care centers allow workers to bring their own children with them to work. Educational requirements for child care workers vary by state. Most municipalities require workers to have at least a GED or high school diploma and pass a criminal background check. A career as a per diem nurse can be an excellent choice for a working mother. She can decide to work as many or as few shifts as she prefers depending on her child's needs each week. She can decide to work while her child is in school or split parenting duties with a spouse and take shifts during late nights and on weekends. While many per diem nurses are not provided with benefits, per diem employment agencies offer higher wages to compensate. In order to become a per diem nurse you must graduate from a nursing training program, pass state licensing exams and have at least one year of full-time nursing experience.

    Freelance Writer

    • Freelance writers provide professional writing services for a wide variety of clients. A freelance writer may write articles one day and research material for a book proposal the next. A career as a freelance writer works well with the needs of parenting. Moms can frequently write articles from the comfort of their own homes, thus reducing the need for costly daycare expenses. A freelance writer can often work on evenings or when a child is school, thus allowing her to be there for her children as they need her. Freelance writing requires concentration and excellent communication skills. A mother can point to her published articles and books as source of pride to her children and provide them with motivation to master the basics of writing.

    Teacher

    • Teachers are employed in wide variety of settings including elementary schools, universities, prisons and the private sector. A job as a teacher offers hours that match a child's schedule, ample time off and stable employment. Mothers can easily drop their children off at daycare or a public school and then go back to work. Many teachers have benefits that include excellent health insurance and financial incentives for earning additional educational credentials such as a master's degree. Teachers are required to earn a bachelor's degree.

    Small Business Owner

    • Small business owners own their own business. A career as a small business owner offers many advantages for working mothers. Many small businesses can be operated from an office in woman's own home. This allows women to avoid a long commute and be there for her children as needed. Small business owners can also negotiate meeting times with clients thus allowing women to attend school functions. A small business owner can also see unlimited income growth and in this way help to provide financially for her family as her children grow up.
