If you've ever owned a Pekingese you know how differently they act compared with most dogs that you've had. In 700 B.C., only the wealthy or royalty in China could own a Pekingese. They were a much larger dog originally but were bred smaller by Chinese priests. The first Pekingese arrived in the United States in 1902 as a gift to Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt.
