What Hardware Is Required for Home Wireless Internet?
Creating a wireless home network with the capability to connect to the Internet is easier and less expensive than you might think. With just a few pieces of additional hardware and a broadband connection, you can create your own wireless network and be cruising the Web in very little time.
-
Wireless Network Interface Card
-
First and foremost is the Wireless NIC. You need an interface that can receive and exchange information using wireless signals. Wireless NICs come in many forms, the most common being USB adapters. There are also PCI and PCMCIA alternatives; choose the type most convenient to you.
Broadband Connection
-
While a broadband connection is not strictly necessary to create a wireless network, if you want to access the Internet as well then you will need to purchase a subscription from your local ISP. The ISP will provide you with the necessary Ethernet cables and modem.
-
Wireless Router
-
You'll need to purchase a router to create a home network and it will need wireless capabilities. Make sure the wireless signal the router uses is supported by the wireless NIC you purchased. Chances are it does, but it's never a bad idea to check.
Active Phone Line (DSL Only)
-
If the only broadband service available in your area is Digital Subscriber Line, you will need an active phone line to make use of it. Typically a DSL provider will provide you a discount when you purchase DSL and a phone line from them.
