Poland is a former Eastern Block country of approximately 38 million people. It is located in eastern Europe and bordered by seven different countries: Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Russia. Poland has one official national flag; it has several variations. All of the flags are red and white; the white signifies peace and morality, while the red stands for bravery, endurance and vigor.

The official national flag of Poland is split horizontally into two fields. The top field is white and the bottom is red; the aspect ratio of the entire flag is 3:8. The national colors and flag were officially adopted in 1919, the same year Poland regained its independence.

    The Bandera

    • The bandera is a variation of the official flag.

This version of the flag, also called the bandera, is used to represent Poland abroad and was originally meant to be flown from ships at sea. It incorporates the national emblem of Poland into the top, white portion of the flag. This emblem has existed in slightly varied forms since the 12th century. Originally the emblem of the Piast dynasty, it became the official national emblem in 1919. It consists of a white eagle on a field of red. The eagle is turned to the right and has golden talons and a golden crown. There is a slight variation on this, called the air force ensign, that adds a red and white square symbol to the upper left corner.

    Naval Ensign

    • The naval ensign version of the flag is similar to the bandera in that it has the white and red horizontal split with the eagle emblem in the upper half. The difference is that the naval ensign has a different aspect ratio -- 10:21 -- as well as an equilateral triangle removed from the right side, giving it two mirrored points on the top and bottom.

    Naval Jack

    • The Naval Jack version of the Polish flag also has a variation in the aspect ratio -- an almost square 5:6 ratio rather than the standard flag's 3:8. It still retains the white and red top and bottom, but also incorporates a four-sided symbol in the center, split horizontally over the two segments of the flag. The top and bottom of the symbol are opposite colors of the field they are located on. The center of this symbol is a red circle that contains an armored right arm holding a sword.

    Presidential Flag

    • This flag mostly consists of the eagle emblem with gold crown, beak and talons on a solid red background. The aspect ratio is 5:8 and the flag is bordered by a folded white pattern and red and white lines of various widths.
