Spider Novelty Gifts

Spider Novelty Gifts thumbnail
Spiders evoke strong reactions in people ranging from fear to fascination.

In American Indian Choctaw lore, Grandmother Spider first brought fire to the tribe, as well as teaching humans about pottery, weaving and spinning. Ancient Egyptians included among their pantheon of deities Neith, a spider goddess associated with hunting as well as weaving. Greek mythology contains the tale of Arachne, whose weaving talent and pride in her skill prompted the goddess Athena first to move her to suicide, but later to resurrect her as a spider. If you have a friend who is an arachnologist, weaves or for other reasons has strong feelings about spiders, you can find a wide range of novelty gifts related to arachnids.

  1. Spider Toys

    • Buy someone a stuffed toy that's a bit less cute and cuddly than a plush dog or bear; a stuffed spider makes a slightly goth statement when placed on a pile of pillows. You can also choose a spider puppet so the stuffed spider can seem to crawl across the bed or floor. An oversized tarantula toy can provide creepy playtime fun for children old enough not to be easily scared, or laughs for an adult who appreciates the eight-legged creatures. You can also buy a motion-sensitive plastic spider toy designed to drop down from the ceiling.

    Spider Wear

    • You can buy a friend a T-shirt with an image of a spider accompanied by a humorous caption. Buy someone who just completed a degree in arachnology (the study of spiders) a Spiderman costume as a graduation present. A spider-loving guy can wear a spider-covered tie. A spider woman you know might love a black velvet cape whose lining looks like a web. Purchase -- or make -- a spider hat your spidery friend or relative can wear for Halloween or any day they feel like they need a little arachnid energy. You can also buy a ring with a gem as the spider body and eight legs wrapping around to form a band.

    A Spidery Home

    • Your friend will get a reaction from guests every time she serves beverages in spider mugs or atop spider coasters. Posters, magnets, clocks and mousepads bearing their images permit spiders to weave their webs in every room of the house of your favorite spider-lover. Spider fans will enjoy the look on the faces of guests returning from the bathroom if they have a toilet paper dispenser designed to look as if an arachnid perches atop the paper roll. A make-believe yellow traffic sign warning "Spider Crossing" might be a good way to keep inquisitive visitors from venturing down a private hallway.

    Spiders, Spiders Everywhere

    • Spiders can also turn up in many surprising places including key chains, knife handles, greeting cards and baby booties. You will also find spider nightlights, pocket flasks, money clips and business card cases. If you have a spider-loving friend who appreciates exotic pets, buy him a pet tarantula, complete with its own terrarium habitat.
