Drag Queen Ideas

Successfully dressing in drag requires thought.

Whether you are dressing in drag for a theater class on the subject matter or you are performing at one of the city's hottest clubs, having some costume ideas will help to get you started in creating a fabulous outfit for the event. All of the small components work together to make the outfit.

  1. Selecting a Name

    • Define yourself and your style with a drag name. Consider a name that is a play on words, such as Amanda Reckonwith (a man to reckon with), Miss Inglink (missing link) or Bertha Venation (birth of a nation). Select one that suits your personality, such as the Pink Lady for the drag queen who is a girly-girl or the Dark Lady for one with more hints of edginess about her personality.

    Choose a Character

    • Select a personality that suits you or creates an entirely new personality for yourself. For example, try a camp drag queen style which is based off of clowns, satire and dirty jokes. Some drag queens emulate the feminine style to an extreme, wearing heels higher and dresses tighter than any actual woman would wear. Another idea is to take on traits of a particularly famous female, such as Madonna, Cher and Celine Dion.

    Creating a Feminine Face

    • Simply putting on makeup is not enough. Apply bronzer or blush to your cheekbones while sucking in your cheeks to create contour. Using brozer under your chin will not only make your neck look thinner, but also to give you a stronger jaw line. Use bronzer on the sides of your nose to make your nose look thinner. Draw on light eyebrows for an even more feminine effect.

    Jobs

    • Working as a drag queen is certainly a career that is recognized, although it may be a difficult one in which to get started. Look into local dance clubs, bars or even comedy clubs to see if anyone is hiring. Generally, you'll be making your living singing, impersonating a celebrity or lip syncing the songs of that particular celebrity who you wish to emulate. While the job is rewarding, it can be costly to get into gear every night, and it will take you awhile to perfect your act and style.
