Tips for Painting by Numbers

Paint by numbers is fun for children and adults.

Painting by numbers is both a fun and artistic hobby. It enables you to create paintings with little skill and just a few supplies. While it is true that you do not have to be artistically inclined or experienced to successfully paint by numbers, knowing some tips and tricks of the trade can help make your finished product look more professional.

  1. Keep Extra Supplies

    • If you really like to paint by numbers, there are a few supplies you may want to keep on hand. A fine tip paintbrush helps you neatly paint smaller sections of your painting. It is also great for adding the finishing touches if you like to go back and add small details. Keep some extra paint around in case you run out of common colors such as white or black.

    Keep Brushes Clean

    • It is important to keep your paintbrushes clean; otherwise you may end up inadvertently mixing colors. When you are painting, keep a cup of clean water available to dip brushes between colors. Keep a rag to dab the brush on after you rinse it. Dump out the water in the cup regularly when you are painting because if the water gets too dirty, it does not clean the brushes.

    Add Details

    • When you are doing a paint-by-numbers project, there is no rule that says you cannot personalize your painting. If you are comfortable enough to deviate from the instructions, you may consider changing the shades of the suggested colors by mixing paints to make them darker or lighter in hue. You can also go back and add details such as cracks in pavement or bricks, or snowflakes falling from the sky.

    Be Patient

    • Painting by numbers is supposed to be a relaxing activity so there is no need to rush a painting through completion. It is important to take it slow so you don't end up outside the lines or with colors smudged together. To avoid accidentally blending colors, you can paint one color at a time and allow it to dry before starting another.
