Charlie Chaplin Costume Ideas
Only a few celebrities can claim to be icons, and Charlie Chaplin was one of them. The English-born actor and comedian coined a distinctive look that's recognized around the world. Whether you're dressing up for Halloween or a look-alike contest, creating a Chaplin costume is easy. Just make sure to include a derby hat, cane and some baggy clothes to complete the look of "The Tramp."

Hat

One of the actor's most famous accessories was his bowler or derby hat, which is a must for any Charlie Chaplin costume. Go to a thrift shop or vintage store to find one, or raid your grandfather's closet. Some costume stores also sell plastic replicas of these head pieces. Just make sure it's black with a round top. Women and men dressing as Chaplin can also use the hat to hide their long hair. Just pin your locks in a bun that will fit inside.

Charlie Chaplin's cane was one seemingly small accessory that he used to carry his comedy and make plenty of laughs. One of his most iconic canes was made of bamboo, so try to find one for yourself specifically made from that kind of wood. If you can't find bamboo, use any single-colored cane with a hook. Practice twirling it around your finger a few times before making your appearance to really capture the character.

Not many people would recognize Chaplin without his iconic mustache, so make sure to include one in your costume. If you're able, grow one yourself. Just start a few weeks in advance so it's lush enough by the time you become Chaplin. Additionally, many costume stores sell mustaches in the famous Chaplin shape. Or try making a mustache yourself by penciling it on your upper lip with black eyeliner or face paint.

Dress like Charlie Chaplin by recreating the classic tramp look he coined in the film, "The Tramp." This outfit should include dark, baggy dress pants. Make sure to include a tailored almost-too-small coat with at least one button. Wear a white shirt and vest underneath, and allow everything to get a little wrinkled. Top off the outfit with a vintage tie and oversized dress shoes. Just make sure the shoes aren't so big that you'll trip over them.
