WordPress Spacing Issues

WordPress is a content management system that allows users to organize text, photos and other media on their website easily and efficiently. Unlike pages that are built with HTML or CSS, WordPress has all the coding preinstalled. Users choose from a variety of options to customize their site. Wordpress is not without its faults, though. The automatic spacing of objects and text within posts can cause problems.

  1. Photos and Text

    • An image that is inserted into a WordPress page can sometimes cause problems with the spacing of the text around it. It can create a large amount of space above, below and to the right of it. This actually isn't a problem with the program and can be attributed to the user, who probably has not selected the correct alignment option. Remove any space by left-clicking on the image once, then clicking on the "Edit Image" button that appears. In the new pop-up window, select the "Left" or "Right" alignment option, based on preference. This will remove the space and fill the area next to the image with text.

    Hidden Spaces

    • Often a post will look properly lined up in the design view but have random spaces between paragraphs and objects when it is previewed or posted live. Some people call these "hidden spaces" because they are invisible in the design view but obvious through a live URL. The common cause for an extra or hidden space is unwanted HTML code, and you can remedy this by viewing your post first in HTML. Click on the "HTML" tab located at the top of your post's design dashboard and scroll down the content, looking out for any standalone HTML formatting codes. These codes would normally make the text bold or italic but because they are without any text, they will create an added space between objects. Look out for HTML codes such as "<strong></strong>" and "<em></em>" and delete them to remove the extra space.

    Forcing a Space

    • Certain WordPress themes (a template for the design and style of your site) will automatically remove any spaces from your posts and bunch text together into continuous paragraphs. If you want a space to appear every time you hit the "Return" key, you might need to insert a forced space using a HTML code. Simply change your post design view to HTML and locate a part of the text where you need a space inserted. Press the "Return" key to force a break and then -- on the line between the text -- type in " " to stop that space from being deleted or collapsed.

    Captions

    • Some WordPress users like to insert their images without captions. But when you're uploading the image and you leave the caption field empty, a decorative border that would normally appear around the image is lost. Keep that border and still have no caption by inserting a forced break into the image caption box. Do this by clicking inside the caption field and inserting "" into the box. Alternately, press the space bar key to get the same result. Your image should now have a border but no caption.
