Turn pine cones into Christmas decorations.

Pine cones are found wherever evergreen trees grow. Pick up pine cones that have fallen from the trees rather than picking them from the branches of the trees. During the holidays, cinnamon-scented pine cones are available in most discount retail stores. Spruce up pine cones with glitter, paint, ribbon and wire, and turn them into something fun you can do with your children. You can decorate your home with them or even use them as gifts. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pine Cone Garland

    • Gather dozens of pine cones together, and brush the dirt off with a soft bristle brush. Start with a roll of rope twine. Don't cut the twine; start with the exposed end. Wrap the rope twine around the pine cone twice, and tie the end in a knot. Wrap the twine so that it's hidden inside the layers of the pine cone, and tie it toward the bottom so that the pine cone hangs down. Hold another pine cone close to the first, and wind the twine around it in the same way, creating a string of pine cones. Continue adding pine cones until the garland is the desired length. Cut the twine from the spool, and tie the end in a knot, tucking the ends into the final pine cone.

    Glitter Cones

    • Gather pine cones in a variety of sizes. Fill three fairly deep bowls with gold glitter, white glitter and silver glitter. Spray the bottom half of the pine cone with spray adhesive, and dip it into the glitter. Shake gently to remove the excess glitter, and set the pine cone upside down in an egg carton to dry. Make several glitter cones, and place them in a clear bowl for display. Add cinnamon sticks for additional appearance and a nice aroma.

    Pine Cone Planter

    • Fill a planter with a lightweight material such as scraps of cardboard and balled-up newspapers. Collect several pine cones, and sort them by sizes. Create a minimum of three size groups. Start with the largest pine cones, and wire them together using floral wire, making sure that the points or tops of the pine cones face outward. Make a round layer of pine cones that sits just inside the planter. Make layers, each slightly smaller than the next until the planter is filled with a pine cone tree. Wire the layers together at the back of the pine cone tree.

    Christmas Tree Ornaments

    • Take several pine cones and a small jar of white paint. Paint the tips of the pine cones white to mimic the appearance of snow. Let the paint dry overnight. Cut lengths of red ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the bottom of the pine cone, and tie into a bow, leaving a large loop. Hang the pine tree ornaments by the loop in the ribbons.
