Wisconsin Cheesehead Sayings

Wisconsin Cheesehead Sayings thumbnail
Wisconsin residents are affectionately known as "Cheeseheads."

Whether you're from the Midwest or just an NFL fan, you may be familiar with the term "Cheesehead" -- especially if you're from Wisconsin. Because the state of Wisconsin is notorious for cheese production, residents of America's Dairyland are lightheartedly referred to as "Cheeseheads" by Americans nationwide. Many Wisconsinites embrace the nickname and correspondingly, many comedians, agencies and natives of the state have coined several Wisconsin Cheesehead sayings.

  1. Sports Sayings

    • Since Wisconsin is home to the NFL's Green Bay Packers, a few Cheesehead sayings are regarding football. The phrase "Go Packers" is a standard salute among Wisconsinites who follow their home team throughout the football season. Another popular saying among the Cheesehead football community is "The Green Bay Packers never lost a football game. They just ran out of time," a quote from Vince Lombardi who was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s.

    Dairy and State Sayings

    • Wisconsin is well-known for its farms, dairy production and abundance of dairy cows. Correspondingly, a few commonly used Cheesehead sayings make reference to dairy related topics. Many Wisconsinites refer to their homeland as "The Dairy State" or "America's Dairyland," acknowledging the mass production of dairy products in the state. Other sayings used to identify Wisconsin include "The Badger State," "The Copper State" and, appropriately, "The Cheese State."

    Cheese Sayings

    • Because Wisconsin dairy farms produce a significant amount of cheese, cheese shops and distributors are plentiful and most restaurants, delicatessens and eateries offer vast selections of cheese dishes and products. Inevitably, common jokes and sayings made by -- or about -- Wisconsin residents include humorous references to cheese. Some cheese related sayings include "check out our cheese balls", "come cut our cheese" and, the most aggressive, "eat cheese or die."

    Sayings To Attract Tourists

    • The dairy state is notorious for more than just milk, cows, football and cheese. Wisconsin also boasts some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the country. Rolling hills and wooded lakes, streams and forests have made Wisconsin one of the most visited ski and winter sports and summer camping destinations in the Midwest. The Wisconsin government has used a number of Cheesehead slogans to entice tourism throughout the years. A few of them include "Life's So Good," "Escape To Wisconsin" and "Live Like You Mean It."

"You May Be From Wisconsin If ..."

    • Many comedians have composed joke lists that itemize certain comical traits and habits of people who live in Wisconsin -- Cheeseheads. Such joke lists are distributed amongst friends in mass emails, published on online humor websites and even performed by stand-up comedians. Each saying typically begins with the phrase ""You may be from Wisconsin If ..." and finishes with an amusing ending such as "you can pronounce Menomonie, Manitowoc, Oconomowoc and Waukesha" or "you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time."
