Country Kitchen Window Treatments

Country style curtains can give your kitchen a light, airy feeling. Choose from one of several styles of curtains that add a country flair. Country style curtains are usually made of a lighter-weight fabric, which makes them a little less formal than a traditional heavy drape. Some country curtains have ruffles while others do not. Use washable fabrics for best results. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Country Ruffles

    • One type of country style curtain starts with a basic panel but has a ruffle added along the edge of one side of the curtain. The ruffled edge is the side of the curtain that ends up in the middle of the window. When making your own ruffled country style curtains for your kitchen, make the rod pocket casing before adding the ruffle. Cut a length of fabric that is twice as long as the length of the curtain and about 4 inches wide. Fold the ruffle in half, gather and attach to the curtain. The inside edges of the curtains can be straight or have a curve that goes around the inside edge. Keep the ruffle going all along the bottom edge of the panel if you use a curved edge.

    Cafe Style

    • Cafe style curtains work well in country kitchens. A cafe style curtain is actually three different pieces that make up the window treatment. The top portion of the window treatment is a valance, which is a short piece of fabric that only comes down the top portion of the window about halfway. The bottom portion of the cafe style window treatment is made up of two straight panels. The fabric you use is partially what will make this fit into a country kitchen. Use a print fabric, or purchase cafe curtains that have a definite country look to them. Cafe curtains work especially well in French country style kitchens.

    Panel Tiebacks

    • Tieback curtains are simply two straight panel curtains that have a coordinating strip of fabric used to hold the curtains back and allow sunlight to come in. These are simple curtains to make and can be lined or unlined, depending on your personal preferences. Panel tiebacks work well for those who sometimes want privacy; loosen the tiebacks when you want privacy, or hold the curtains back when you need more light. These no-frills curtains make them fit well into a country decor.

    Valance

    • A valance is a short curtain that only covers from one-third to one-half of the window, which works well for windows over kitchen sinks. If you hang longer curtains on windows over kitchen sinks, they will have a tendency to get dirty from splashing water and grease. The valance is another curtain that allows plenty of light to enter the room. These are simple to make and do not take a lot of fabric.
