Pictionary was commercially invented in 1985.

Board games, such as Pictionary, are a great source of fun among children, families, friends or anyone at a social gathering. For those on a tight budget yet eager to join in on the festivities, Pictionary is one of the few board games that can be created at home with little to no effort.

  1. How to Play

    • Divide the players into teams of at least two. Give each team a name and distribute sheets of paper and a pencil to each player. Decide which team goes first, then allow someone from the team to choose a note card with a random word or phrase. A designated person should time the teams. When the timer says go, the team can draw a picture of their word on the paper in the allotted time (usually one minute). The goal is for the other team to correctly guess the word. If the team correctly guesses the word, it receives one point. The next team will then repeat this process. When the note cards run out, the team with the most points wins.

    Homemade Pictionary

    • Someone who is not playing should prepare several words written on individual note cards. These note cards will be drawn at random, and designated teams will try to guess the words. Each word should be labeled in one of the following five categories (or you can be creative and design more category themes): person, place or animal; action; object; challenge; all play (a word from any of the other categories).

    Family Pictionary

    • One interesting way to turn a homemade game of Pictionary into a bonding experience for children and parents is to create game cards with phrases that represent places visited during family vacations. Categories might include: Disney Land, hotel names or states. Words for such categories can include: beach, sand, wave, Mariott, Hilton, mountain, snow or cabin.

    Educational Pictionary

    • Pictionary can be a creative teaching tool, especially when working on vocabulary words in a variety of subjects. Categories for this homemade version might include: English, history or science. Words in each category might be: Shakespeare, war or mitosis.
