Creating a beautifully garnished, or decorated, cake for any occasion can be a fun and rewarding task. Use common cooking items to put the finishing decorative touches on a freshly baked cake. No matter the flavor of the cake, garnishing can be used to turn what might be considered an ordinary cake -- even a storebought or box mix cake -- into something extraordinary. Garnish the cake as a whole, or cut the cake and garnish individual servings.
Garnish with Chocolate
Chocolate is a versatile food that can be used in different forms to garnish a cake and other desserts. Fill a decorating bag with melted chocolate. Use a small round tip to pipe the melted chocolate onto wax paper. Create any design you want on wax paper. You may want to put a piece of paper under the wax paper with a design on it that you can trace. Allow the design to cool completely and remove the designs with a sharp knife. Use the designs to garnish chocolate cakes. You may also choose to garnish a cake with chocolate shavings or by creating a design with chocolate syrup on a plate that a piece of chocolate cake is served on.
Garnish with Citrus Fruit
Use citrus fruit to garnish cakes. Lemons, limes and oranges are great for garnishing cakes, especially lighter cakes like sponge cakes, or those with a fruit filling or flavoring. Cut lemon slices and apply the slices to a decorated cake for a fresh looking garnish. Or cut the rind into small strips and tie them in knots. Use these knots to garnish individual plates of cake or in the center of a cake.
Holiday and Special Occasion Garnishing
If you are creating a cake for a holiday or party, let the theme of the event dictate the garnish you choose. Use candy canes to garnish a Christmas or winter cake. A birthday cake garnish may follow the party theme or could simply include balloons made of icing. You could even a small toy to garnish a cake. Consider using candy, small toys or other small and lightweight objects as garnish.
Other Cake Garnish Ideas
There are a lot of ways to garnish cakes. Confectioners sugar and coconut flakes are a pretty and delicate garnish to give a cake a finished look. Chopped nuts and edible flowers also make nice garnish. You can also simply decorate a cake with colored icings and create interesting textures and patterns to create a one-of-a-kind look.
