Birthdays are meaningful occasions which allow reflection upon a special person in our lives. A great way to celebrate is with a unique and homemade gift. Wonderful birthday gifts can be created easily and inexpensively, but contain much more thought and meaning than any store-bought present. Homemade gifts can also be customized to accommodate the birthday person's personality, interests and likes.

Using an old T-shirt of any color or pattern, a piece of white chalk and a pair of scissors, you can create a bag to give as a wonderful homemade birthday gift. Simply mark and cut the neck of the shirt into a "V," remove the sleeves and snip 1-inch slits through both pieces of material at the bottom, spaced 1 inch apart to create a fringe. Tie each front piece of the cut fringe together with the corresponding back piece to create a closed bottom. After finishing your homemade bag, fill it with special treats to create an even more personalized gift.

Using six square wooden pieces, acrylic paint, carpenter's glue, six photos and a high-gloss finish, you can create a set of personalized coasters for a creative birthday gift. Simply paint each of the wooden pieces with a desired color of acrylic paint. After fully dry, adhere the chosen photos to each of the six squares using the carpenter's glue. After 12 more hours of drying time, coat the pictures with the high-gloss finish and allow to dry. The finished photo coasters may be stacked neatly and tied with ribbon.

Create a delicious birthday menu gift using a list of the recipient's areas of interest, paper, a piece of string and some thought. Simply choose five things that your friend enjoys, such as candy, movies, snacks, music or sports. Using a computer or your own handwriting, prepare the first page of the menu by listing the following topics: starters, first course, main course, side dishes and dessert. Each subsequent page will represent each of the five "courses" listed above and will cover each of the five things that your friend enjoys. When finished, print the menu and tie the pages together using the chosen string. Finally, gather the things that you wrote in the menu to be presented with this thoughtful gift.

If the recipient is a music lover, create a homemade CD using a plain CD cover, a blank CD, and a list of his or her favorite songs. After gathering the chosen songs from different CDs or the computer, arrange and burn the playlist onto the CD. A specific CD label sticker can be made to cover and decorate the disc, but for a more personal touch, permanent markers can be used. In the cover, make sure to include a special sheet listing each track and explaining what meaning the song has regarding your relationship with the birthday person.
