A prepaid Visa card is a credit card with a predetermined value that can be used at any shop or restaurant that accepts Visa cards. They make great gifts since they are similar to gift cards except they can be used at a wider range of places. Despite this benefit, there are also a number of problems associated with a Visa prepaid card.
Making an online purchase is not as straightforward as using a regular Visa credit card. You will need to register your card with the issuing provider by calling it or going to its website. When the card is given as a gift, sometimes it has already been registered by the giver, so this will also need to be corrected.
Prepaid Visa cards only have the value already inserted on the card so they usually cannot be used for large purchases. Also in the scenario that the amount you want to purchase is more than the amount on your card, you will need to have a backup mode of paying such as another card or cash.
Balance is Unknown
It can be difficult to keep track of the value on your card unless you keep a record. Since most merchants will not be able to find out that information, in order to find out your balance, you can call a number or check online but this can be a hassle.
Loss of Card
If you lose the card, you will lose the money on it unless you kept a record of the number on the card. Most people forget to do this and since the card is different from a regular credit card, it can be more difficult to track the account down and get the money back.
