Those seeking a fast paced and varied job may find working as an ER nurse an enjoyable occupation. Individuals who work in this capacity face an array of different scenarios throughout the day, constantly staying on their toes and ready to address patient needs, regardless of what they may be. When hiring someone to fill this position, hiring committees often seek candidates who have not only the necessary qualifications, but also the ability to think on their feet and respond rapidly to situations of all types as a patient’s life may depend upon the nurse possessing these skills.


As with all interviews, the first questions you face in your ER nurse interview will likely deal with the acquisition of basic information about you as a candidate. Expect the hiring committee to ask you about your qualifications, requesting information about the certifications you hold and where you completed your schooling. You will likely also be asked to discuss your strengths and weaknesses, allowing the hiring committee to get a picture of who you are as a candidate.


After acquiring this basic information, the committee will likely begin to ask you about the skills that you possess that will make you a good ER nurse. They may simply ask you: “Why would you be a good ER nurse?” Or they may present you with specific skills and ask you to relate a story of a time when you were asked to use these skills.


While experience isn’t necessarily required, it is often preferred. The hiring committee will almost certainly ask you to tell it what experience you have in the field of nursing during this interview process. When responding to this question, focus most specifically on experience that is directly germane to ER nursing, such as time working in emergency care facilities or tending directly to patient needs during emergency situations.

Hospital Specifics

When trying to separate you from other candidates, hiring committees often want to know why you are eager to work at their hospital over all others. Expect the committee to ask you what drew you to the hospital in question, and prepare a detailed and logical reason you are eager to work in that facility. To make your reason more impressive, spend time researching the hospital so you can speak about it with authority instead of only in generalities.
